Designed c. 1897 by Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge as the main branch of the Chicago Public Library, it was renovated in 1977 when the library moved to new quarters. The building features two stained glass domes and numerous mosaics by Tiffany Studios.

It now houses art exhibits, theaters for performances and a visitor information center.
