  • These islands are the relic shoals of a flood tide delta, indicating the presence of an inlet at some time in the past where Cocoa Beach is now. The islands have been heavily impacted by dredge and fill and the digging of mosquito canals. Saltmarsh mosquitoes don’t lay eggs in standing water. Instead they use moist sand/mud and when summer rains flood these low areas the eggs hatch and mature before predators are able to disperse in to eat them. The shallow ditches were dug to allow mosquito fish access to the marsh interior. The canals were dug to simply remove the low areas altogether. More information at www.thousand-islands.org
