ancient, fortification
The entire perimeter of the town of Priene was surrounded by fortifications of ashlar, which are blocks of stone that have been neatly cut to create an even face. These walls were seven feet thick, with numerous towers along their length and three main gates. The pictures, copyright of Dick Osseman, give two views of the East Gate, which cannot be seen on Wikimapia. Most of the walls can still be traced today, including these that border the most northern part of the town's acropolis.
