In 1965, Howard Johnson Hotels opened a twelve story, 200 room hotel, featuring a view of Lake Erie from every room and the Red Coach Grill restaurant. Howard Johnson' left in 1986 and the hotel was subsequently known as Lakefront Plaza Hotel and Lakefront Lodge before closing in 1992. After remaining empty for almost two decades, the hotel was demolished in 2009
