Isn't it odd, that the CLEVELAND Cavaliers played all the way out here?

  • It was an experiment in regionalism that didn't quite work. The designer envisioned this area as being the center of a wider northeast Ohio regional community.
  • Yes, and all the major rock concerts that were billed for Cleveland played out here, too. The Cleveland Crusaders played here, and I think, also, the Barons and The Force.
  • The planners were a few decades too visionary. They planned urban sprawl to connect Cleveland and Akron before the end of the century. That never happened and unfortunately the building wasn't able to pay to save itself from the wrecking ball after the Gund/Quicken Loans Arena was built. This was a beautiful arena and much better than the new one downtown and sadly missed.
  • Some of the largest crowds ever attended FORCE games back in the 1980's.
  • If only the Gateway project had included a stadium for the Browns instead of a downtown arena, the nightmare that took place after the '95 NFL season wouldn't have happened. At any rate The Coliseum his was a great venue with tons more character than the new place downtown, and a much easier drive for those of us who came up from the south. The only real knocks I can think of is that it had only one concourse which could get very crowded, and to a lesser extent (unless you happen to have been rich enough to hold one), all the luxury suites were at the top of the arena.
  • I believe that this is the place where Michael Jordan hit "The Shot."
