abandoned / shut down, 1906_construction
The Pinawa Dam was the first practical hydroelectric dam in Manitoba. The dam was completed in 1906 and operated until 1961, when it was opened so that the full flow of the river would feed north into the Manitoba River and Lac du Bonnet. This was due to the construction of the Seven Sisters Hydro Station, some distance to the southwest, which used Lac du Bonnet as its reservoir. The Pinawa Dam now forms the basis of a provincial park.
