Built in 1941/42 to replace the original tunnel dug by Cladius Crozet. The original 4,263-foot tunnel was the longest in the US at the time (1856) and one of the longest in the world, a remarkable feat of engineering, dug though solid granite with only hand drills and black powder, a decade before the invention of dynamite.
