Platreef Shaft 1

South Africa / Limpopo / Potgietersrus /
 mine, mine shaft

Shaft 1 sinking commenced in October 2015 by contractor Aveng Mining who had been working on the engineering and design since June 2013. The expected completion date is in 2019.

The shaft has a diameter of 7.5 m and a depth of 980 m. Initially the shaft will serve for early mine development and as the sinking progresses there will be lateral development at the 450, 750, 850, and 950 Levels. Essential mine services will also start to be developed, and auxiliary cage guides that will support initial mine development will be installed and later be used for emergency egress during mine production.

Once shaft sinking is complete there will be a changeover from sinking buckets to a loading arrangement that will allow for 2,500 t/d of hoisting that can be utilized once the mine is in production. Once the mine is in production, the shaft will serve as cooling and refrigeration ventilation intake that will predominantly service the lower mining zones and have a maximum velocity of 15 m/s (620 m³/s). The shaft will also serve as a ventilation intake designed for a maximum velocity of 11 m/s (860 m³/s), an emergency egress, and as a redundant backup to shaft 2. All mining activities will take place between depths ranging from approximately 570 m to 1,170 m below surface.

  • Once the shaft is completed I will be updating the details to account for that, such as completion date, and removing references to the shaft not being done and replacing them as being done.
