The 1772' Alpine Tunnel carried a railroad line through the Continental Divide. It opened in July of 1882, at an elevation of 11,523'. The Denver, South Park and Pacific used it until November 1910. America's railroads built 31 crossings over the Continental Divide, of which 10 other crossings remain in use. The tunnel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as a historic district.
