Initially known as Holtz-Massacre Pass to the Americans. The Japanese called this Arai Pass (荒井峠, Arai Toge) and it was held on three sides by 1st Company, 303rd Infantry Battalion under Captain Hayashi. On 15 May, Colonel Yamazaki ordered Hayashi to move his men from the south side of Massacre Bay to positions that would protect valley entrances to the Chichagof Bay area. The positions were located on peaks over 2,000 feet in height: Henderson Ridge to include Terrible Mountain, Black Mountain, and Cold Mountain. Approximately 200 infantry soldiers and one battery of mountain artillery were under his command. American forces in Massacre Bay originally planned to link up with the Northern Force via the pass and push the Japanese towards Chichagof Harbor, but they were held up for over a week by Hayashi's men.

The pass was eventually taken after continuous shelling from both ships and track-mounted howitzers until only a single platoon of Cpt. Hayashi's company remained to defend the pass against two American infantry companies before being defeated.
