Larue D. Carter Memorial Hospital has served persons with mental illness since 1948. In 1996, the hospital moved to its current location (formerly a part of the VA Medical Center). With a three-fold mission of treatment, teaching/training and research, the hospital serves as a training site for psychiatric residents and medical students and the current capacity is 159.

The hospital is composed of two service lines that provide care to adults with mental illness and children who are seriously emotionally disturbed. Service lines include: Adult Services/Research, Youth Services.

Treatment at all hospitals is individualized through interdisciplinary assessments and may include stabilization of symptoms through psychopharmacology, management of medical problems, individual and group therapy, patient and family education, rehabilitation and recreation therapy, academic and skills training, vocational training, and supported employment.
