The bend in the Mississippi at Plum Point is said to be the "worst place on the Lower Mississippi" because of the snags and sandbars causing many steamboats to run aground here. The Army Corps of Engineers worked on removing the snags in 1829, reducing the dangers of the fast current around the bend.
Plum Point was also the site of a naval engagement during the Civil War when a fleet of seven Confederate armed steamboats sank 2 Navy gunboats on 10/May 1862. Confederate spirits were buoyed thinking that Memphis would be safe with Fort Pillow holding the Northerners at bay. Their joy was fleeting as Union forces marched on south and Fort Pillow was abandoned..
