This region was added to the Missouri Territory after the New Madrid earthquake of 1811, all thanks to a rich landowner named John Hardeman Walker. The original border of Missouri was going to continue across the 36.30 parallel to the Mississippi River, but because Walker wanted his land to be included, he successfully lobbied Congress to be a part of the state of Missouri in 1818. This is probably the only example of one single person getting their land included into a state or country in world history.
