interesting place, historical layer / disappeared object
Ordered by Maj. Gen. John Bankhead Magruder in 1863, this Confederate gun battery was intended to defend Austin against a possible Union invasion from the south, which never took place. Held a commanding view of the San Antonio Post Road (now South Congress Avenue), which remained the main highway south of town until 1956. The fort was abandoned before it was finished, and nothing remains today. It was built over with houses in the mid-20th century. Archeological excavations were undertaken by TXDOT in the mid-1990s prior to the construction of the Ben White Freeway. The locations of the earthworks were determined, but no artifacts were found.
