Convention center opened in 1960 and formerly named Cobo Center, for former Detroit Mayor Albert Cobo. Original plans called for only the arena, but the Auto Dealers' Association wanted a space to hold the Detroit Auto Show, so the exhibit hall was added and paid for, in part by the association. The center was expanded in 1989 and still hosts the show which is now known as the the North American International Auto Show.
