Sherman & Joyce Bowie Scott Hall (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania)

USA / Pennsylvania / Bloomfield / Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania / Hamerschlag Drive, 346

Overview

The Sherman and Joyce Bowie Scott Hall is one of the newest additions to the Carnegie Mellon University Campus. The 100K SF building houses wet and dry laboratories, collaborative and office spaces, a cafe, and a 10K SF cleanroom facility. It is the new home for Nano Fabrication, Wilton E. Scott Institute for Energy Innovation, and it provides an on campus location for the Biomedical Engineering Department. This distribution creates a local hub for CIT.

Scott Hall is comprised of two unique components, the North Wing and the Courtyard. The North Wing is an elevated multi-story structure built on the hillside between Wean and Roberts Halls which is a major crossroads for campus infrastructure. The Courtyard is a surface level structure built in the service space between Hamerschlag, Porter, and Wean Halls.

The Courtyard structure incorporates a green roof and walk-way which extends the historic Hornbostel Mall to the North Wing. Here, a centrally located cafe is a vibrant gathering space for the entire University. The new space enriches the campus fabric and strengthens connectivity by linking four major buildings, Hamerschlag, Porter, Roberts and Wean Halls.

The North Wing building is open to public and occupied; cleanroom and courtyard construction is scheduled to finish by the end of summer 2016.
