Dug in the 1970s by the governmental agency SENARA (Servicios Nacional de Aguas Subterráneas, Riego y Avenamiento: National Service of Underground Water, Irrigation, and Drainage), the 4km long canal was meant to help ease the seasonal floodings in the middle reaches of the Tempisque by allowing the water a more direct route to the Gulf of Nicoya.
