theatre, apartment building
4-story mixed-use building originally completed in the mid-1800s as two separate buildings, but later combined with a new facade. It is clad in beige brick, with the ground floor painted white. At the east end are large double-doors, next to a glass-and-metal storefront. There is an entrance to the upper floors in the middle, with a glass door below a rounded blue canvas canopy. At the west end are two service doors.
The upper floors have three bays of single-windows at the east half, while the west half has a triple-window bay with a single-window bay on either side. All of the windows have brick lintels and stone sills. Two iron fire escapes run down the facade, which is topped by a simple metal coping and metal railing.
Since 1973, the ground floor of this building has been home to the 180-seat Classic Stage Company, founded in 1967 and one of New York’s longest operating Off Broadway theaters. There is evidence that the space has operated as a theater since at least the 1920s, including the Mercury Theater and the Abbey Theatre in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The building also appears to have been, at least at some point, connected to the theater at 100 Third Avenue, which it connects with at the rear. There is also a small storefront occupied by Everyman Espresso.
