The ruined castle of Ōria is located near the middle of the strategic vale of Tempē. It's current name refers to a fair maiden said to have thrown herself from the rocks during the castle's supposed 12-year siege by the Turks in folk tradition. The castle is likely to be identified with medieval Lykostomion ("wolf's mouth"), seized by the emperor Andronikos III Palaiologos in 1333, when he restored direct imperial rule over this part of Thessaly. The ruins noted today represent only part of the original fortified complex, much of which has been obliterated by the construction of modern roadways.
