Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Ste Saint Marie Railroad, later known as the Soo Line, constructed this bridge in 1905. The mainline on this bridge connects western Canada and North Dakota with the Twin Cities and Chicago. The Soo Line Railroad has lost most of its former identity, and is now little more than the legal name of Canadian Pacific Railway's United States operations.

The bridge marked the northern end of navigation on the Mississippi River until June 2015, when the St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam was closed to all traffic.

Railroad bridges were built at 56 locations to cross the Mississippi River,
and 36 of these crossings are still in use by freight railroads.
