Formerly one of the biggest yards in the country, both The Boston & Maine Railroad and the Delaware & Hudson Railway called this stretch of property home, and this yard was a gateway into New England using the Fitchburg Division of The Boston & Maine (With the famous Hoosic Tunnel located on the same division). Both companies became one after being acquired by Guilford Transportation Industries in the early 1980's. By the late 1980's, GTI closed the yard. A tornado in the 1990's leveled many of the historic buildings which GTI had simply left for abandoned. Today, Pan Am Railways (GTI's new corporate identity) still the property. For years only a single track still ran through the yard.

In January 2012 a new intermodal terminal operated jointly by Norfolk Southern Railway and Pan Am Railways began operating. An automobile distribution terminal is also being added to the new railyard.
