Built 1893 by Thomas Douglas (T.D.) Stimson (1828-1898), as the first 6-story building and largest in Los Angeles. Demolished 1963, for this parking lot. Architect: H. Carroll Brown (1861-1920), Chicago, just designed Stimson house (1891) then this "Stimson Block."
Stimson, born in Canada, moved to USA, became a lumber magnate, retired in Los Angeles in 1890, built a glamorous house and several buildings. Was vice-chairman of the Chamber of Commerce. Widow donated land and building for Stimson-Lafayette Industrial School, east of Alameda, north of First street, as boarding school for single girls. Descendants own Stimson Lumber, WA.
