Biltmore is the largest single family home in America at 175,000 sq ft. Built in 1889 for George Washington Vanderbilt. It originally had 125,000 acres but now has 8,000. The house was designed by Richard Morris Hunt and the gardens were designed by the Olmsted brothers who also designed Central Park in New York City. Today the estate is open to the public.

  • The Biltmore Estate is definitely worth spending a day to see. The home is still privately owned by Vanderbilt family members, who opened the home and property to tourists. It is a very beautiful, well run, clean and non-commercial attraction.
  • Check out the location to Vanderbilts mountain getaway "Buck Springs Lodge", his private view to Mount Pisgah. http://wikimapia.org/#lat=35.4138951&lon=-82.7491254&z=18&l=0&m=b&show=/15478914/Buck-Spring-Lodge&search=biltmore
  • George Vanderbilt had only one child, a daughter, who married into the Cecil family. The home (Biltmore Estate) is owned by the William Cecil, who is one of two children in the Cecil family.
  • The other son, George Cecil, took ownership of the family dairy farms and other properties. He has developed much of his lands and built hotels, shopping centers and subdivisions.
