lighthouse, place with historical importance, interesting place

Construction on the Plum Beach Lighthouse was begun in 1897 by contractors using the “pneumatic caisson” method which was considered cutting edge technology at the time. This was achieved by dropping the caisson in the water down to the bay's floor, then pumping out the water which was replaced by concrete. The lighthouse was then built upon the newly hardened concrete. Granite rip rap was then placed underwater around the base of the caisson for support. When the lighthouse was first built, it was simply protruding from the water. (cont.- www.plumbeachlighthouse.org

  • My sister and I always wanted to move into the rusty old lighthouse (long before restoration) seeing it as kids from the old J'town suspension bridge on trips to RI to visit our Grandparents, fond memories.
