Site of the Army's first amphibious assault during WWII.
Approximately 200 men from 7th Infantry Division's Provisional Scout Battalion (a mix of men from 7th Recon and 7th Scout companies) were shipped here via the USS Narwhal (SS-167) and landed on the beach using rubber craft as part of Operation Landcrab.
The battalion was formed at Fort Ord and specifically trained for this landing in January 1943. Some of the members of this battalion were either hand-picked for this duty or were volunteers; emphasis was placed on physical endurance, and knowledge of weapons and explosives. They endured intense physical training at Fort Ord and with the Marine Amphibious Reconnaissance Company at Camp Pendleton.
