Shevchenko Bay

The largest bay of the Northern Aral Sea, located in its western part.
In 1849, under the leadership of A. Butakova, the first scientific expedition to describe the Aral Sea was conducted, during the research the bay was named Paskevich in honor of Field Marshal of the Russian Empire Ivan Fyodorovich Paskevich.

In 1961, the bay was renamed in honor of the poet Taras Shevchenko.

Within the second phase of the project “Regulation of the Syrdarya River and Preservation of the Northern Aral Sea” (2010–2015), envisaging an increase in the volume of the Northern Aral from 27 km³ to 59 km³ and a rise in water level to 46 m above sea level in Shevchenko Bay.
