Eloise opened in 1839 as the Wayne County Poor House and Infirmary. It gradually expanded and added wards for tuberculosis and mental patients. At its height, Eloise consisted of 78 buildings and 902 acres, now only ruins, an unmarked cemetery, sewer lids with "Eloise Hospital" cast into them, and 4 of the original 78 buildings remain.
