Kitsault was a molybdenum mining town which was built during the 1960's and later abandoned in 1980. The molybdenum mine was a strong producer between 1967 and 1972 with considerable reserves left at closure. Miners at that time lived in nearby Alice Arm.

When prices rose in the late 1970s, the mine owner decided to build a new townsite. Kitsault was an instant town with everything from curbed roads, school, houses, waterfront apartments, a hospital, shopping centre, curling rink and swimming pool. But it was a short-lived boom. When metal prices collapsed in 1982, all activity came to a halt and the town was abandoned except for a resident caretaker who looked over the buildings. Recently the whole town was sold to a developer who plans to turn the area into a wilderness resort (www.kitsault.com).
