Zeyzoun Dam bursted on 4 June 2002, killing 22 people and otherwise affecting around 10,000. 251 houses were destroyed by the 3.3. m (11 ft) wave from the emptying reservoir which swept across 80 square kilometres (31 sq mi) of the surrounding countryside. The Syrian government had ignored signs that the dam needed repairs.
