This relatively small space (by the standards of other studios) was the home to a remarkable extensive backlot. It had residential streets, a small town square, and a fairly large western town. Between the early 1940s and the early 1970s the backlot was used extensively. Disney needed the space for more stages, however, and so outdoor filming was shifted to its Golden Oaks location in the San Fernando Valley (about 75 acres of rural, residential, and business sets). Golden Oaks had been used for locations for "ranch" and "open spaces' locations.
