Backlot Early First National and Warner Bros..

The first backlot in "Hollywood" with permanent, reusable sets. Previously outdoor sets were built and torn down as needed, the space constantly changing. Jack L. Warner realized, for the first time, that permanent sets could be built and reused for many pictures and rented out to other companies. Gradually all the big studio lots adopted this concept of building a backlot.

Over time the size of the Warner Bros. backlot shrank as the lot was used for building stages and other buildings. Today it is just a fraction of its original size. Even so, it is still one of the largest in Hollywood.
