And known by a variety of other names.

The area (roughly) that now encompasses the Forest Lawn and Mt. Sinai cemeteries was originally the Nestor movie ranch (circa 1911). Owned by David Horsley, the builder of Hollywood's first movie studio, this property was used for location shooting. The Nestor-Horsley properties were absorbed into Universal through merger and Universal moved here before buying Universal City two miles to the west. It was named Universal Oak Crest Ranch during this period. It was later Lasky Ranch (owned by Jesse Lasky Feature Play Company, circa 1916). Lasky was the precursor to Paramount Pictures. This ranch was the site where D.W. Griffith shot the battle scenes for his epic film, "Birth of a Nation."
