Tower Hill Underground Station (entrance) (London)

United Kingdom / England / London
metro station, metro entrance / exit

Tower Hill is the nearest underground station to the Tower of London and Fenchurch Street station, as well as Tower Gateway DLR (closed as of Summer 2008). It is served by the Circle and District Lines. There are 2 main platforms and a west-facing bay platform used by some District line trains.

In 1882, a station opened on this site called Tower of London. It closed 2 years later and was replaced by a larger station at Mark Lane, when the line was connected up to form the Circle Line. By the 1960s, Mark Lane was far too small and crowded and there was little space to expand it so the larger present day station was opened in 1967. Since then, a new entrance has been opened here with the original entrance now an exit only.

  • An advert for the tube showed Henry VIII buying a ticket saying "Tower Hill return please" except someone had written below "and a single for the wife".
