Initially developed starting in 1878, Pataha City was declared the interim County Seat upon the creation of Garfield County in 1881. That honor lasted only for six weeks before nearby Pomeroy became the de facto County Seat. Pataha's fortunes continued to falter in 1885 when a railroad was built to Pomeroy, but continued no farther, leaving the community without a vital connection to the outside world. In 1893 a fire destroyed the business district, which wasn't rebuilt, thus resulting in Pataha's current status as essentially a residential suburb to Pomeroy.
