The spire of Notre Dame Cathedral was formerly the tallest point in the cathedral. The first iteration of the spire was erected between approximately 1220 and 1230. It was removed in 1786. A new version made of wood and covered in lead was designed by architect Viollet-le-duc in the 1800s. The spire fell on April 15, 2019 after succumbing to a large fire which completely destroyed the cathedral's roof. The spire collapsed into the cathedral's nave below.
