The historic heart of Massillon, downtown still houses the city's office of government, two theaters, a variety of stores and boutiques. Long the focus of the city's attention for redevelopment, the western portions of the area have been largely razed over the past several decades and remade with a more suburban character. The area no longer has department stores or other large retail functions.
