The Mayapur Dam, Haridwar, built during the construction of Ganga Canal in 1840s, is named after the ancient town of Mayapur, which finds mention in the texts of traveller Huan Tsang who visited from China in 629 AD, during the reign of King Harshavardhan.

Later, it finds mention in 'Sacred Places of Pilgrimage' in 'Ain-e-Akbari', of Abul Fazl, written during the reign of Mughal Emperor, Akbar, (Vol III, page 306)

The 1911 encyclopedia britannica suggests presence of an old fort, ruin of three temples in the area, though they have all but disappeared. The nearby residential area still bears the name of Mayapur.
