Kharag Prasad (pronounced as Kadga Prasad in Oriya), is a village panchayat in the western area of Dhenkanal district in the Indian state of Odisha. It is situated on the banks of the Brahmani River (Orissa's 2nd largest). It has a population of more than 15,000 and it spreads across an approximate area of 10 square kilometers. The village is well connected with rail (Eastern Railways), road (National Highway 55) and water. It has been famous for the trading activities that can be traced way back to the 19th Century. The population of the village mostly consist of Khatriyas and Vaisyas with minor proportions of people of all other castes and religions.
Due to the connectivity and availability of raw materials, coal and water in the last two decades in and around the village many large & medium industries (iron and power) have been set up resulting in rapid growth of the location and the per capita income of the residents. However, the sudden economic development has taken its toll on the environment and quality education. Over the last five to ten years, the attitude towards education has changed. Most of the children and parents in the area are not keen to get a good education and are all are having the notion that whether they have education or not will get money either by getting some job in some factory or doing some small business. In long run, the same is going to affect the socio-economic stability and further widen the social and economical gap between people in the region. Due to recent fall in the world economy, almost all factories/industries in the area are either shut or operating at a very low capacity utilisation. Due to this, many people have lost their jobs and many have no income from the businesses connected to the industries. This has given rise to thefts, loot and other ilicit way of collecting money by few jobless people. The stalwarts of the area are requested to look into the matters and take appropriate and timely steps to prevent further deterioration of the situation. Education of the children should be given more and more importance. Otherwise, people from other places will come and rule the industries and the locals will just serve them. Also, we can not ignore the environmental issue which is at a very bad shape now. We mush plant more and more trees and prevent any further industries in the area. With rapid growth of population, it will be very essential to have a proper drainage system in the area, which has to be planned and implemented in the area. We also must educate people about the ill effects of drinking liquor and try to minimise the same.
Hope, the world economy will be back on its feet soon and the industries in our area start running to their full capacity.
