Home of the Baffinland Iron Mine's transshipment facility for mined iron ore at the Mary River mine site. Raw iron ore is stockpiled through the winter at the port site where it awaits the retreat of sea ice to open sea lanes to Milne Inlet, typically in July. Once the port is open, the stockpile is loaded onto shuttle freighters and discharged onto larger bulk freighters waiting in deeper water for transport to European markets.
