This is mining lease ML10326 for the Sonoma Coal Mine which is owned the Sonoma Mine Management, a joint venture comprising: QCoal Group, JS Sonoma Pty Ltd, CSC Sonoma Pty Ltd and Watami (Qld) Pty Ltd. On July 10, 2012 a former partner in the joint venture, Cliffs Natural Resources Inc., sold its 45% interest in the mine with 90% to QCoal and the remaining 10% to JSS.
ML10326 falls under permit ID 108619, permit name SONOMA WEST which was approved on September 13, 2007 with an expiry date of September 30, 2037. The approximate area is 1062 hectares. First production was in 2008.
Sonoma is an open cut mine capable of producing up to 4 million tonnes per year of hard coking and thermal coal and exploration activities defined a resource of approximately 40 million tonnes of economically recoverable coal. The site comprises typical infrastructure such as a coal preparation and handling plant, which processes 800 tonnes per hour of coal, various haul roads, rail lines, water storage dams, waste management facilities, workshops, offices and power systems.
On December 3, 2012 QCoal applied to divert Coral Creek in order to expand the mine and extend mine life. The initial advice statement and other documents documented the environmental and heritage value of Coral Creek and the company it would build a buffer zone to protect it from the mine. The request was approved and then a landowner who relied on Coral Creek for water took the company to court but lost the appeal against the diversion of the creek for the expansion.
