The building occupies the former site of Recreation Park, home field of baseball's Pittsburgh Pirates (then known as the Pittsburgh Alleghenys) from 1884 to 1890. The club moved here following lease dispute and flooding problems at Exposition Grounds, and returned to new Exposition Park in 1891.
