Dukhizhiznik meeting hall : Melikoy-Prakhladnoe (Whittier, California)

USA / California / East La Mirada / Whittier, California / Whittier Boulevard, 16119
prayer ground / prayer hall  Add category

Mislabeled sign reads: "First Prochladnoye Molokan Christian Church of Whittier". The faith is not Molokan, but Spiritual Christian Dukh-i-zhiznik. The common nickname for this congregation is "Melikoy" after the Armenian name of the village from which the original members migrated to Los Angeles (~1905 - 1912). Before 1923, the village was in Kars oblast, Russia, then the region was transferred back to Turkey. While in Russian territory, the village name was Prokhladnoye (Прохладноые : cool temperature). In Russian the building is properly called a "meeting/ assembly/ prayer hall," not a "church" which in Russian implies the Orthodox Church. The word church is used to get non-profit status to avoid taxes.
