Starting in 1955, the APDA (Detroit Edison along with a consortium of other private sector companies) joined a government-financed push to develop technologies for a liquid metal-cooled fast breeder reactor. This group of companies intended to make nuclear power a commercially practicable means of electric power generation. The testing done at this location within Sibley Quarry would eventually go on to help create Fermi I, a nuclear power plant located a few miles south in Frenchtown, MI.
