Lala Island was formed by the creation of the Volta Lake following the construction of the Akosombo Dam (1961-5). Its outline is variable, depending on the operating level of the lake, which is between 240 and 278 ft. The current satellite image shows the island joined to the mainland, but the Survey of Ghana 1:400,000 map of 1967 actually shows three separate islands.
