NYU Palladium Residence Hall (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York / East 14th Street, 140
 dormitory, high-rise, 2001_construction

166-foot, 17-story postmodern dormitory completed in 2001. Designed by Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo & Associates, the residence hall houses 960 NYU students - both graduate and undergraduates, as well as containing the Wasserman Center for Career Development on the 2nd floor, the Palladium Athletic Center, and music practice rooms with pianos. It is clad in orange brick above a 2-story grey granite base (extending up through the 3rd floor at the center).

On the north facade on 14th Street, the ground floor has eight bays with square openings recessed between the piers at each end of the building, with another five bays in the center; two of the center bays have revolving doors, and the other three have glass double-doors. The outer bays have storefront windows and entrances. The two end bays at each end have freight entrances with metal doors. The 2nd floor has the same arrangement, minus the two at each end, all with plate-glass windows, with five more at the middle of the 3rd floor. The ends of the 3rd floor both have six bays of single-windows topped by tall, flat stone lintels.

The upper floors have 21 bays of off-set double-windows of varying widths. There is a corbelled brick cornice 12th floor, topped by a setback. The top floors have two very wide bays as well as several other bays of offset double- and single-windows. There is another setback above the 16th floor.

A south wing extends back from the north part of the building, connecting to the south building section that fronts 13th Street. The south facade on 13th Street is also clad in variegated orange brick, with a granite ground floor. There is a service entrance with steel doors at the far west end, and then two large loading bays. The rest of the ground floor has eight bays; most have plate-glass windows, but two have steel-framed glass doors, one has a revolving door, and the east end bay has another service entrance with a steel door. The granite cladding extends up to the 2nd floor at two of the entry bays, while most of the rest of the 2nd floor to the east has large metal louvers. There are no openings on the 3rd floor, which is topped by a corbelled cornice with a setback to the upper floors. The upper floors on the south facade have 13 bays of offset double-windows of various widths, and this building section terminates at a 12th-story roof.

The ground floor on 14th Street is partially occupied by a Trader Joe's grocery store.
