Plunkett Bridge aka Pollagh Bridge.
Single-arch masonry canal bridge, built in 1809, over the Grand Canal. Random rubble limestone construction. Arch of semi-elliptical profile. Original stone parapets replaced with tubular steel railings between concrete posts on cantilivered concrete walls. Spandrels are cement rendered. Limestone plaques set into each of the original parapets read: 'Plunkett Bridge 1809'. Limestone towing path flanking canal under archway. Towpath under the bridge at each side.
Although Plunkett Bridge has been altered with the addition of the metal railings, it makes a positive and attractive addition to the canalscape. It is an important piece of architectural heritage associated with Ireland's inland waterways and stands as a prominent feature within the landscape overlooking the Roman Catholic Church.
