"Nonesuch House" (demolished) (Lake Success, New York)

USA / New York / Thomaston / Lake Success, New York
residence, LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast, historical layer / disappeared object

'Nonesuch House', the estate of attorney Cortland D. Barnes, designed by Peabody, Wilson & Brown c.1918 in the Cotswold style and built by E.W. Howell & Co. Barnes' family was involved in publishing, running A.S. Barnes & Co. In 1907 Barnes married Katherine Lansing Barney, a daughter of banker Charles Tracy Barney, president of the Knickerbocker Trust Company. The 40-room picturesque English Manor was #300 Valley Road, later renamed Community Drive. Much of its interior wood was salvaged from local barns. After Barnes died in 1952, his wife lived there until she passed around 1957, after which John Hay Whitney annexed her property onto to the Greentree estate.

"Nonesuch House" was torn down piece by piece with much of the stone, wood and copper reused elsewhere. What was left was burned and then buried. Remnants of the property and driveways remain.
