archaeological site, ancient ruins
An excavated portion of the ancient Greek and Roman city of Epidauros or Epidaurum. The town was abandoned in favor of modern Ragusa (Dubrovnik) in the 7th century. The local settlement was accordingly called Civitas Vetus ("Old City"), which has become Cavtat in Slavic (Croatian). In Italian, it is known as Ragusa Vecchia ("Old Dubrovnik").
