Biggest settlement on Sandoy. It name means "Sandy Beach" and may refer to the biggest beach on the Faroe Islands which is located on the eastern part of the town. Sandur already existed at 11th century. Chest with 98 silver coins from that period was found in local graveyard at 1863 by gravediggers. They are now stored at Føroya Fornminnissavn in Tórshavn. There are also remainings of stave church from 11th century. Modern church was built at 1839, it was set on fire at 1988 when all church's silver melted. One year later, during reconstruction archaeologists found pagan burial ground from Viking Age there. At Sandur there's also a museum Sands Bygdasavn organised in old farmhouse from 1812, showing how people lived on the Faroe Islands between 19th an 20th century. in museum in Copenhagen a water-mill from Sandur can be found, which was originally built at XVIII century.
