Sørvágur

Faroe Islands / Vaga / Sorvag /

Second biggest village on Vágar with around 1000 people living there. Firstly it was thought, that settlement in this area begun around 15th or 16th century, but during building school in 1957 remainings of old building footings were found. It's a proof that Vikings lived there since around 9th century. First writing proof of settlement existence is description from 1584. Even though there were older ones, current church in Sørvágur was built in 1886. During World War II British solders built an airport in Sørvágur which is used till this day. It was one of the most secured places on the Faroe Islands that time. Museum of Sørvágs Bygdasavn shows history of the village.
